4th DOAMF Championship Tees-off March 8, 2014

The 4th edition of the DOAMF Charity Golf Championship is scheduled to tee-off at the Golf Course of Ikoyi Club 1938 on March 8, 2014, in Lagos, Nigeria.

The event, a memorial, set up to honour the memory of late Master Daniel Ogechi Akujobi  who died at the age of in a ghastly motor accident, on his way back to school, has become one of the biggest charity golf events in the country.

Funds raised during previous tournaments were committed to a number of emergency intervention projects including building an emergency ward at the Enugu State University Teaching hospital, Enugu.

Coordinator of the Organising Committee, Pat Bassey, said that, due to the judicious use of funds raised, quality and transparent management of the event, the profile of the championship has been on the rise.

According to him; "A good number of corporate organisations that are seeking partnership opportunities to support charitable causes have found the DOAMF event a good platform" .

He added that;"This is definitely a bigger tournament in all ramifications and interest in sponsorship opportunities is very encouraging. With the feelers emerging, this year's edition will be bigger and better ".

The Charity event is an 18-Hole round of golf on a very challenging and foremost golf course in Nigeria. It also, presents opportunities for participants to win laurels, whilst offering a platform to make charitable contributions towards positive intervention to meet critical and emergency needs of people in infrastructure-starved parts of the country.

CAF Press Release: Orange CHAN 2014 Rises to the Occasion

Addressing the press conference at the CAF/LOC Headquarters today, the Local Organising Committee is upbeat about its delivery to date of the Orange African Nations Championship.  The LOC has ensured that facilities and infrastructure provided are of a standard benefitting that of Africa's Home Champions: the hotel facilities, stadium infrastructure and training facilities as well the tournament experience is equally the same as that experienced during AFCON,  if not better.

 

With two more groups to complete the Group Stages, the LOC CEO, Mr Mvuzo Mbebe, re-articulated the LOC’s commitment in delivering a high quality and seamless tournament that South Africa has become accustomed to.  “Africa’s Home Champions are about celebrating African football. CHAN’s main objective is to open up a horizon for all these players who bring domestic leagues to life but most of the time do not get the opportunity to put on a jersey for their national teams.  Today we can stand proud to say that CHAN has been nothing else but a brilliant football spectacular displayed by players who a few years ago could only dream about representing their national teams’’, said Mr. Mbebe.

 

Since the beginning of the tournament, and after 20 matches played, 31 players have scored between a total of 44 goals, 4 of which have been scored by Bernard Parker, whilst 2 goals each have been scored by Ifeanyi Ede, Rabiu Ali, and Christantus Ejike all from Nigeria, as well as by Diogo Alberto from Mozambique, Ibourahima Sidibe from Mali and Junior Sentamu from Uganda.  This is an average of 1.9 goals per match. 

 

The intensity and the competitiveness of this tournament has seen 11 goals scored within 15 minutes of the match, and 9 goals striking the net within 76th and 90th minute of the game.  Nigeria remains the leading goal scorer with 8 goals after only 3 matches, followed by the eliminated South Africa and Mozambique who have scored 5 and 4 goals, respectively. Libya and Burundi sharing 3 goals each after 2 matches.

 

“The number and the quality of goals scored so far shows the quality of football and skill displayed on the pitch and is an indication that this tournament is fast becoming a reservoir for players hungry to make their mark. An average of 1.9 goals per match, compared to 2.7 goals per match scored during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is quite impressive and it proves the quality of players that the national teams put forward for CHAN” said Mr. Mbebe

 

Mr Mbebe also said the tournament is gaining momentum as reflected in the increasing number of people attending matches across the 3 host cities.  A total of 127 986 have attended matches by match 20, against a total of 197 681 printed and distributed. After 3 matches  Cape Town has recorded the highest number of stadium attendance with a total of 74 388 and 18 879 for Athlone Stadium,  followed by Free Stadium with 19 021 after 2 matches, and Polokwane recording a total of 11 698 so far.

 

So far 20 matches have been played with brilliant skill of football displayed on the pitch and 4 more matches will be concluded between today and tomorrow of both Group C and Group D. For the quarter finals, 2 matches will be played at Cape Town Stadium at 17h00 and 20h00 on the 25th followed by Polokwane and Mangaung on the 26th at 17h00 and 20h30, respectively. THE EPL AND BRITISH COUNCIL PARTNERS SOCCEREX

Soccerex has announced a new agreement with the English Premier League and the British Council which will see the hosting of a Premier Skills showcase event alongside the Soccerex African Forum 2013, which takes place in Durban on October 1-2.

Premier Skills is a global partnership between the British Council and the Premier League which uses football as a tool to engage with and develop the skills of young people. One of its core aims is to improve the quality of local football by providing face-to-face training for grassroots coaches and referees, using highly skilled coach and referee trainers from the Premier League and its clubs. The showcase event will see more than 20 local amateur coaches from the Province of KwaZulu-Natal benefit from a three day programme of practical pitch and classroom-based activities, as well as attend some of the conference panels and keynote speeches at the African Forum itself.

The Premier League will also be outlining the objectives of the programme and the opportunities it brings as part of the African Forum conference programme. Tim Vine, head of public affairs at the Premier League, said: “We are very pleased to be involved in the Soccerex Africa Forum in Durban again, this time showcasing to delegates the positive impact Premier Skills is having across the continent.  Premier Skills is at the forefront of our international development strategy and it is in Africa, working in partnership with the British Council, National Governments and Football Associations, that it having the most widespread effect. Over these next three years we plan to take Premier Skills on a significant step in Africa, further developing it in existing countries and expanding it into new ones. The Soccerex Africa Forum provides us with the opportunity to not only promote the hugely positive impact the project can have, but to also engage with many of the key decision makers in Africa in one place.”
